The medieval time, wasn’t a very good time for Rome. It got conquered and torn apart by the barbarians, which led to a lot of poverty and destruction all around the capital.
The conditions were so worse that there are even evidences that people fell back on cannibalism. The society and the great capital as we knew it, was falling apart.
In these terrible times the poor grew poorer and well the rich managed to survive. However we have seen a contrast in the costumes of each sections of the society.
Looking at it closely, the sumptuary law played an important role in dividing the classes, as they were used to "ensure that a specific class structure was maintained." These laws served to regulate the "dress of various classes".
The clothes worn by a person, directly depended on the amount of wealth the person had. The richest would wear extravagant designs, elaborate headdresses and with the richest of the fabrics. All classes generally wore the same clothing, although distinctions among the social hierarchy began to become more noticeable through ornamented garments. These common pieces consisted of tunics, cloaks, jackets, pants, and shoes.
