digital vs print

  • ·         What are the benefits of digital media versus traditional media (e.g. Print/TV etc.) for a fashion and lifestyle/luxury brand?

In today’s generation, where one cannot function efficiently without the internet, the digital media undoubtedly plays a momentous role. We love our glossy paper, but our reality is digital.
A fashion and lifestyle/luxury brand would benefit more from there digital forum rather than print. This is because of high level of interactive experience which just adds more value to your cause; print media however can become limited. Digital media has a higher reader engagement, give a man a magazine he’ll read it once, give the man an Ipad app and he’ll read it every day.  One of the greatest benefits of a digital media has to be the immediate readership feedback; you can now ask the reader about their experience and opinions.

  • ·         In your opinion, what is the role of a mobile (Smart phone) in digital marketing for a fashion and lifestyle brand/luxury brand?

A smart phone is the ultimate medium for a brand to communicate with its market at a personal level but however, in my opinion, the core values of the brand are at the risk of being compromised. A luxury brand is not just about its product but also other factors like, the overall ambience and experience. While the digital media helps reach a greater market, it also puts the brand identity in danger of degrading its value.

design and emotions

Visuals appealing, non-appealing, attractive, ugly, bright, dull, colorful, black and white impact a person in various ways. Time and again, history has proven that visuals are and always will be an important component in one’s life.
The first video explains how movies were the ultimate medium for magic, with complete control of everything the audience can see. Giambattista della porta, worked with the principles of illusion (assumption, presumption, context in reality) to understand how to attract the audience visually. An image does not only show but also makes you believe.

Georges Méliès, who was the inspiration behind the movie 'hugo' was one of the first to realize how visual effect could sway people. His movie trip to the moon is till date considered a piece of fine art and design. Conversely, visual effect has improved drastically during the past years, all thanks to the ever growing technology. Visual effects are all about how you manipulate another person and create illusions.

Wall-e, has been and always will be one of my favorite movies, for the reason that it has an interesting emotional impact as well as it really gets your attention visually.

Whereas the visuals are concerned, design is another very significant aspect. Principles of design (Balance, Proportion, Rhythm, Emphasis, Unity) play an important role in a visual and how that visual is being perceived or interpreted.

In the second video by Jacek Utko, explained how introducing design in a product could not only increase the appeal but also the productivity. He explains how an artistic approach made sure it was more attractive and how the spread sheet design made it a good design. Also, he introduced an architectural rule, function and form into the content and design of the newspaper. And also I completely agree that the design could save the newspaper, it could not only make it more interesting but also much more informative.
In another video by Don Norman, which explains how a good design which is visually appealing can make a person emotionally happy, where as a good design which isn’t so attractive can distress a person. A good design is functional yet delightful and our mind still doesn’t register it consciously but subconsciously. He says, if you are happy things work better, hence if a design delights you visually it would work better.

According to me, he basically explained the relationship between emotions and creativity.
I believe a good design can impact a person subconsciously, and make the product more efficient however; I do have a doubt about how an appealing yet inefficient design could still please the users in the long run.

opinions (personal post)

You know what makes me the happiest?
It’s when people have opinions.
Not necessarily similar to mine, but just opinions.
You go come here, you read this blog and you might agree or disagree with whatever I am saying, you might say what bullshit or you might just end up loving me, but there is NO IN BETWEEN. I get it, there is a thing called diplomatic, but you know what? Why don’t we leave that where it belongs, in politics? However, I am not writing because I want you guys to love me, I write today with the sole purposes of letting you guys know that, your opinions define you.
Opinions define you as a whole.
I cannot emphasize on this enough.
Well, as years go by, your opinions start, well, the correct word would be intensifying.  I say the best people you’d ever meet would be part of a debate team. They have their view, they put their view forward and those swift sons of biscuits will have you on their side in no time. Nevertheless, they fight.  They try not to give up although I once saw someone in a debate, while he was being quivered with questions by the opposing team shout, “WHY WONT YOU JUST LET ME COMELETE WHAT I HAD TO SAY? WHAT THE HELL? THIS IS SHIT. I AM OUT.” I found it rather Ballsy.
Anyhow, we can’t do that, or we can. Whatever makes you sleep better at night, do it.
Have you guys ever noticed, when you are making a new friend you just maybe try to find out things which you have in common? Like maybe the same taste in music or artist or cuisine or love for a common thing or stuff and stuff. That’s having opinions. Now I not saying that you guys don’t have opinions but what I am saying is, have opinions about stuff that actually matters.
On my way to college today,  my friends and I were listening to radio, because we care about our precious phone batteries too much, so we heard the radio jockey make a rather very sexist comment, and if you know me even a bit you know how I react to that kind of well, trash. And for those who don’t, I don’t like it, I hate it, I loathe it, I despise it, I will kill someone day for this reason.
Now that we have establish that I have no what so ever control over my temper, I will tell you what my friend’s reaction to my temper instead of elaborating how I wanted to kill that radio jockey.
She said and I quote,” 80% of the people in India think all these stereotypes and sexist comments are legit and normal and other 20% of the people in India just let it go thinking it’s a joke or rather a funny comment.”
Frist of all, It got me thinking, when did I make such smart friends? WHEN?

And it also got me thinking where do I belong in this situation?

design and our surroundings

Design is applied in our daily life, whether consciously or subconsciously. From a tooth pick to your laptops, from your window to your cameras, from shed to your umbrellas, everything has design, EVERYTHING.
Although, it’s only recently that the concept of designing the environment to promote public safety and health been put into practice.
The process which is used to design anything (including products, surroundings, logo, etc) starts with a need in mind and not the product. Gradually, this need starts becoming more apprehensive and detailed and soon we have a design solution meeting that need, this is called design process.
The founders of NID (Nation institute of design) Charles and Ray Eames who made some of the world’s major contributions in modern architecture and furniture, were one of the first to acknowledge this process. It’s believed that great spaces reflect the people who inhabit them.
Every surrounding has different impacts on different people. Hospitals use the color green or blue, because it calms most of the people down and keeps the patient from getting nervous. However if a person has a chronic disease, he will associate that color with hospital and it will automatically make him nauseous. Brand like bisleri, Aquafina and himalya, use refreshing colors for their packaging as the user associates those colors with purity and health.
One of the best example from our daily life is the coca cola, its fascinating how from the president till our house helper, consumes the same product. However the evolution of their packaging has had such evident improvements in terms of design over the years.
Design is usually implemented when the surroundings require it. Our roads, highways, footpaths, our classrooms, hospitals, offices, etc all have some design element in them which makes it more functional and free flowing.
Observing design has become a part of my daily routine, even though I want to or not, I end up trying to think what I would to different to improve a certain design or what color palate would I chose to make an advertisement more attention seeking while it also keeps the brand identity intact

medieval times.

The medieval time, wasn’t a very good time for Rome. It got conquered and torn apart by the barbarians, which led to a lot of poverty and destruction all around the capital.
The conditions were so worse that there are even evidences that people fell back on cannibalism. The society and the great capital as we knew it, was falling apart.
In these terrible times the poor grew poorer and well the rich managed to survive. However we have seen a contrast in the costumes of each sections of the society.
Looking at it closely, the sumptuary law played an important role in dividing the classes, as they were used to "ensure that a specific class structure was maintained." These laws served to regulate the "dress of various classes".
The clothes worn by a person, directly depended on the amount of wealth the person had. The richest would wear extravagant designs, elaborate headdresses and with the richest of the fabrics.   All classes generally wore the same clothing, although distinctions among the social hierarchy began to become more noticeable through ornamented garments. These common pieces consisted of tunics, cloaks, jackets, pants, and shoes.
